Adult Recognition

“AHG volunteers are simply amazing! These devoted men and women give one of their most precious and limited resources—time—to the precious girls in their Troop. AHG volunteers have a desire to make the world a better place by investing in the next generation of women. What a noble calling!

As Christians, we are encouraged to follow God’s calling, acting without a desire for recognition. It is true that Scripture says: “Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 6:1, NIV.

With this in mind, how does the concept of AHG Adult Volunteer Recognitions fit into a Scriptural context?

What is the reason/motivation that AHG feels it important to recognize volunteers? Certainly not because an AHG volunteer wants to be “seen” by others as referenced in Matthew 6, rather, AHG wants to thank and appreciate the dedication of a volunteer in a tangible way. It truly is a heart matter. The volunteer does not seek recognition, but those in her/his circle want to show appreciation for the selflessness and dedication obvious in his/her service.

For this reason, American Heritage Girls has created Adult Recognitions. The Bible mentions the word “thankful” about 114 times. In most cases the reference is to our Lord God, but often it is used in reference to His people who serve His people. Such is the case with AHG. Thankfulness is essential to a heart aligned with His. An attitude of gratitude towards others demonstrates the value we find in each of them.

The Adult Recognition program includes Volunteer Pins, Tenure Pins for length of service, Gem of a Leader, Jewel of a Coordinator, and National Level Awards, which require applications and nominations. No matter the level of experience, you may want your heart felt appreciation to be known by your Troop Leadership Team. What a beautiful way to express it!”

Selecting the Troop Board

The Troop Board is made up of five positions that are selected by the Charter Organization and entrusted with implementing the mission of building women of integrity. The Troop Board works together to govern and establish goals for the Troop. The Troop Board represents their Charter Organization and AHG, Inc. to Troop families and the local community. To be selected and accept God’s call to serve on the Troop Board is a privilege and a sacrifice. The Troop Board sets the tone and leads by example in unity, living out the AHG Oath and Creed.

Charter Organizations develop their own selection process. AHG provides tools and resources to support the Charter Organizations through the selection process. Each position has its own volunteer ministry description which outlines the responsibilities and qualifications for the position. Along with the volunteer ministry descriptions, AHG recommends utilizing the 7 C’s of Selection to prayerfully select the right individuals to serve on the Troop Board. Both of these resources are excellent tools when conducting an interview with a potential Troop Board Member. AHG recommends this process begins as early as March prior to the next Program Year to ensure a smooth Charter Renewal process. Your Hometown Mentor and Troop Coach are available to consult and assist the Charter Organization through the Troop Board selection process.

Exploring the Outdoors

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands” Psalm 19:1, NIV

Outdoor experiences are a great way to grow life skills and provide unique experiences. Since the outdoors is a deep-rooted part of the AHG Program, it is crucial for girls to experience God’s creation. These experiences empower girls, grow their confidence, and teach them survival skills. Not only do outdoor adventures help to educate girls about the natural world, but they also provide opportunities for girls to connect with their Creator and His beautiful gift of nature.

There are countless ways which your Troop can implement the Outdoor Program Emphasis. Resources such as A Christ-Centered Balanced and Progressive Program and Program Emphases Overview on AHGresource are available to jump start your Troop’s planning. To learn more about Program Relationships with outdoor focus, view the Outdoor page on AHGresource. The 2020 AHG Girl Handbooks each provide a page of information which is a great way to begin the conversation of this topic with the girls. (TH/EX, Page 48-51; PI/PA, Page 56-61)

“As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him—you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.”

1 Peter 2:4-5, NIV
